Just helpen a mate fit a 2.0L into what was a E36 316 . The 2.0l is a E36 engine which came from one place the loom from another and the ECU from another . Question is does the ecu need reprograming to the engine as the starter motor works but we dont have a spark or fuel pump running. By the way this is in a E36 . Dear i say it. Thanks for any info.

When you say "came from one, came from another" do you mean they were all the same TYPE of engine?

Early E36s were fitted with the M40 engine, same as E30s, but the 2.0 unit was an M50 engine, which is a completely different bag of chips altogether.

If you've got an M50 engine, then you'll need the ECU that matches it. You can't just slap any old ECU on the loom and expect it to work.

Odds are that if the engine & ECU came out of a later E36 (say 1993) onwards they will have EWS, meaning none of this will ever fire.

He'll need a Key, ECU and EWS box from one car before it will work (assuming this is the problem)

I don't know the year & month when EWS came in, the early E36 doesn't have it.

I wasn't criticising your skills, I'm just saying we don't have anywhere near enough info to really help you out.

You need to give the year of the car and the last 7 digits of the VIN off the ECU to start with.
Vanos and none vanos engines need to have the correct looms/ECU dont forget

I take it then that if we had the key that was with the car that the ECU came from it would be ok.???????

You need a suitable ECU and loom for the engine you are using, plus the EWS box and key chip that were originally fitted with that ECU.
The antenna ring and receiver can be from any car.
Keys, EWS boxes and ECUs can be matched together using suitable equipment and software, but it's easier to acquire a set that already matches.

First introduced in January 1994, according to this article:

http://www.computersolutions.cn/blog/wp ... MW_EWS.pdf

There are ways of bypassing it - try a Google search.
