Replace clutch master cylinder. Recommended to replace the slave at the same time, as there's a good chance it will fail soon as well.

Just replaced the slave and master cylinders on my car and its as fiddly as fook to do - I wouldnt want to do it again in a hurry.

Get underneath and soak both ends of the metal pipe which links the master cylinder to the flexi hose in penetrating oil a few days before you start - mine had seized at the master cylinder end and had to be replaced.

Worth buying a braided flexi hose to replace the no doubt worse-for wear item which will have been in the firing line under the car for the last 20+ years.

Replacing the slave cylinder is a bitch - you need a very thin walled socket and plenty of extensions to get at the top nut and even then its not easy especially if you're doing it with the car up on axle stands while bits of dirt drop in your eyes

If the fluid reservoir is dirty ( most will be now ) you can get new ones from BMW for about £10 which includes a new cap and the mesh. Worth doing if you're going to refresh the rest of the system.
