I have just bought a set of studs from GSF and they look slightly different from the studs currently fitted. The new ones are tapered with approx 25mm of thread, most of the thread seems to be protruding from the face behind the rim.

Anyone know if this is correct or should they be longer?

I think they should be around 35mm (of thread)

I have just checked the ETK and it seems that the steel and alloy wheels use the same bolt? They are M12x1,5 (Dunno what the 1,5 means??)

It is probably only non-bmw wheels that require longer studs.

1.5mm is the pitch of the thread.
