Basically I'd noticed some suspicious patches on my driveway, opened the bonnet and started the engine, and to my horror fluid was pissing out near the manifold which smelt very much like petrol. :(

This is the general area of the leak.

And a crop for more exactly where it was.

I couldn't see exactly where the leak was coming from, it seemed to be originating from the silver pipe on the bottom of the two running parallel. It was raining so didn't want to spend too much time with the bonnet up.

Sorry for being so vague, and having next to no knowledge of motors.

Thanks in advance!

No idea why, but the pics aren't loading for me. Anyway...

If you're getting fuel pissing out in the engine bay, first point of call is the TWO rubber fuel lines. They connect to the hard lines just underneath the brake servo, then one runs up the bulkhead to the start of the fuel rail, and the other one goes to the Fuel Pressure Regulator up by the radiator.

The hoses are made of 8x13mm rubber, which you can get from BMW. DON'T buy cheaper brands for this stuff, it just doesn't last, only BMW stuff is good enough.

Even if you're not good at motors, it's quite an easy job to do; you just need a screwdriver to undo the jubilee clips.

If you were in Essex I would have had a quick look for you!

As the other chap said its probably quite minor and an easy fix! When its not raining try to to pin point exactly which hose or pipe is leaking and perhaps use a web site called real oem to ascertain the part number and order it! Simples

I can see the pics and it ties in very much with what 'Grrrmachine' is saying.

The 2 black pipes you've cropped in on are fuel lines - Id check the rubbers haven't perished around the ends near the jubilee clips (you can see this on the first pic you've posted). If they have - chop the ends off for a cleaner cut and re jubilee clip them.

Or just tighten the clips up....

The rain seems to have stopped for a while so I'll go have another look and try what you guys have suggested.
Hopefully I'll be back soon with some good news.

Thanks again all.

Before you go yanking pipes off, be sure to depressurise the system. You do this by removing the fuel pump fuse (11, I think) and then cranking the car until it splutters and dies. Then you can take the rubber pipes off without petrol spraying you in the face at 35psi.

Hi guys, what engine is that? Does the rubber end pipe on the fuel line scenario apply to the 325? Lost a load of fuel today and had to pull up.. Area of leak was under passenger side of engine bay.

She obviously guessed I was planning to get rid

The most common cause of a fuel leak on a M40 is the short rubber hose towards the rear of the inlet manifold, visible from above. To access this , the top part of the manifold needs to be removed.
Any high pressure fuel hose of the correct size is fine. Be sure to get some new hose clips as they will undoubtably strip as you are tightening them :(
