i am getting a new air filter for my 316 m10. as i have changed the carbs to webers i was wondering what air filter i should use to maximise the induction. are there induction kits available? if so from where. also wondering what spark plugs would be best. appreciate any help offered.

You could, but there are cheaper ways to reduce your engine power.
What makes you think that BMW used a filter and intake system that can be improved on by some after market tat?

What else has been done to the engine?

well i replaced the pierberg 2be carb with webers and wanted to maximise the induction. is the filtration technology of the mid 80s not outdated now?

I've no doubt that paper filter element material has improved since the mid eighties, and is likely to have been used in the manufacture of any OE spec. element that you buy for your M10 today, unlike the thing in your link, which looks straight out of the mid seventies.

ha it does look a bit 2001 a space odyssey to be fair. well ill look into getting a better element instead then. you really think it wont benefit? im not worried about keeping everything OE though. not that much of a purist, just want the best performance.

I would be very surprised if that K&N aftermarket filter didn't actually reduce power, just like they do on later E30 engines.

i see. so what is the best option in your opinion? what do you reckon about putting a cone or something down behind the front headlight where the ducting is? could i then do away with the element on top of the carb. or could i get a very good element somewhere for the original filter? like i said before i just want it to run nicely, not too bothered about not keeping it OE spec. i appreciate your input.
