the other week my speedo decided to stop working, its done this before but always restarted working again with no problems, at the same time my fuel gauge decided to start going crazy, it constantly jumps all over the gauge very quickly, the eco-meter also goes straight to zero and stays their.

ive changed the last section of the diff plug, i get voltage between the two wires when ignition is on.
checked the nut on the back of the clocks, it was missing, so put one on, made no difference.

put some old battered clocks in, speedo still didnt work, fuel gauge seemed less eratic but reads in correct.
swapped fuel gauges over into other clocks.

so now i have a steady but in correct fuel gauge and still non working speedo., my service lights all work as they should.

do you think this is most likely to be broken clocks?

If your fuel gauge is incorrect, are the clocks off a car with a different size tank? the gauge needs to be matched to your fuel tank. Is it a twin sender or single sender?

Sorry, not sure with the speedo.

Reads like an issue with the service indicator board.

The speedo, fuel gauge and ecometer(swingometer)all imput information into the service indicator,so when this goes tits up,it effects the stuff connected to it.

Most likely cause is failed ni-cad/lithioum batteries,if the circuit board is undamaged, they can be replaced.A TV type repair place may well be able to help you.

The circuit board is located at the bottom of the instrument cluster, and can be removed by dismantling the cluster, all easy DIY stuff.

all gauges were working perfectly before, fuel guages still goes up and down just not constantly like it did before, pretty sure its twin senders, its a 325 tourer, ill have to man up and strip the rear out to see and check. replacement clocks are from unknown car, ill pop the clocks out again.
also the red fuel warning light has come on, this was a few days after the needle went crazy,

are all s-i boards all the same? one from other clocks looks good.

cheers for the help guys

nothing to man up about, pop your rear bench up, and there are two covers, one on each side for the senders, if you only got one panel you only got one sender. (I am not actually sure if the second panel is still there on a single sender car as I have never owned one).

The wiring for your speedo sensor also comes up under the bench too I think, so you could check theres no damage or anything there.

What car did the new clocks come form, thats what you need to know.

no idea what the clocks came from as they wer a set a mate got with a car, pretty sure they were 4cylinder ones are rev counter is different.

i swapped si board over into both sets of clocks was still the same wrong fuel and non working speedo. Going to try and find a set of known working clocks to test.

mines the twin sender so i shorted the single sender out and have a stable reading now. wire looks ok and i get same voltage at the both ends of the plug, maybe it was just two separate faults happening at once and the diff sender has failed.

The diff sender is relatively easy to check. It's just a switch that switches on and off several times for every turn of the rear wheels.
If the fuel reading becomes stable, but inaccurate, when you short out one of the fuel level senders, then that sender is the faulty one. I've seen it claimed that the LH one can be dismantled and repaired.

would tapping the wires together qucikly make the speed give any reading, or would i not be able to do it quickly enough.

when i bridge the right hand sender it goes to the top and flickers up and down a little, ill pop the sender out could just need a good clean or be a weak joint.

cheers
