When I built my 2.7 I searched for ages on this subject and found the only differences were between air-con/non air-con camshafts
Don't buy a febi camshaft though, mine was and despite running in correctly then using good quality synthetic oil was worn within 3000 miles. Chocolate camshafts from GSF
Even a good used genuine one would be better.
Cheers,
Iain T

There's a lot of choice out there for cams, e.g. Bilstein do OE replacement cams for the E30, or there are a number of 'fast road' options. I have a 273 CatCam in my 325i. It makes a difference - pulls much better at the top end, though I need to get her chipped / remapped 'cause the cam should rev to 7500. FYI, Schrick make their cams under licence to Cat, so if you go for a CatCam you're buying a Schrick for much less money!
Cat's distributers in the UK are:
Quality Engineered Products
25 Junction Road
Burgess Hill
RH15 0HR
West Sussex
Tel: 01444 243720
Fax: 01444 243720
I would thoroughly recommend them.
Also, if you're changing your cam I'd recommend new followers too.

'89 325i - was an SE but not anymore, was bronze-beige metallic (yeuch!) but now techno-violet (thankfully)
'89 Toyota Corolla GTi-16 - track, hillclimb & sprint car (yeeha!)
'08 Buell XB12Ss - American engineering at it's 'best'... good fun though

Shouldn't do, I don't know what the differences are but looking at the cam out of your old engine and the worn GSF one I took from my 2.7 there doesn't appear to be any difference in lift/duration or profile.
Can't see why air-con would need a different cam
BTW Dan your old head is away getting crack tested, results soon.
Cheers,
Iain T

Oh Jesus, I put a Febi camshaft in mine a short while ago...........
BTW, I have air con and it all works fine (the engine and idle), I wasn't given the option af any camshafts, just the one I bought and was told 325i from the year dot onwards.
The car drives very well actually!
