This will be a struggle that will involve lots of swearing!

I take it this is a 6 cylinder engine?

Not done this myself since I owned an E21 about 20 years ago, your problem is that the oil pump and pick up pipe hang down into the sump and foul the pan as you attempt to slide it out.So you have to un-bolt said items and let them drop into the sump.....
If you can devise a way of lifting the engine, perhaps a jack under a mounting arm,it will help.Loads of small bolts to undo, some tucked up and not immediately obvious, there's that coverplate at the back over the lower part of the flywheel to come off,as there's bolts hidden behind.

Going back, you will need to slide the pan roughly into position with it's gasket held to the block with a smear of grease, then fiddle the pump/pick-up pipe into place, swear(a lot)when you drop the last bolt into the sump and cannot quite reach it.....

As above - but use a stiff carboard type gasket and not a nasty cork one - they have a nasty habit of popping out at the back resulting in an enormous oil leak. I think the proper BMW one is the stiff type. As Malc says, a smear of LM grease on both sides sticks it to the sump and creates an excellent oil tight seal.

Job done thanks for advice did not have to undo anything in the sump as I lifted the engine on a jacking point. and unbolted the steering rack.

Oh and yes there was plenty of swearing :x

Malc, going by the title, I think we have to assume that most people don't hack saw cylinders off M20's. :poke:

Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?
