Hi All,

Had my '89 320i (known as old black :/) for 15 years now ”“ was my first car, just went through 117K and I still love it!

A couple of issues have cropped up in the clutch / gearbox department, sorry for the odd terminology I am using here, I’m no mechanic and I can’t think of a better way to explain the problems.

1) The clutch 'chatters' when being released. By chatters I mean with a constant pedal position at the 'biting point', drive is rapidly (say about three or four times per second) applied then released causing a chattering sound. Seems worse when (I guess it gets warm) in traffic etc. Otherwise the clutch operates correctly i.e. frees fine and there is no detectable slip. I guess the clutch plate is slipping then biting? worn out / damaged / contaminated maybe?

2) When driving (clutch pedal fully released, car in gear, car rolling at low (less than 30MPH) speed), releasing or applying the throttle with engine speed below ~ 2000 RPM causes the engine speed to oscillate (at about 2hz, if that helps!!) and the car to repeatedly 'lurch' back and forth.
On acceleration, as engine speed increases, the lurching oscillation subsides, by around 2500 rpm the problem disappears.

On deceleration, the lurching is less severe (less torque in the system?).
It didn’t used to do this! The clutch and gearbox operate perfectly, gears selection is smooth, no trans noise, no clutch noise. The car is drivable but this is annoying!

I imagine that the engine or gearbox mounts were loose or something? Is the drivetrain mounted on rubbers or? It’s worse in lower gears.

Ppfff.... oscillate and lurch........I know, I know
Anyway, if anyone knows what this is likely to be, please let me know. Thanks in advance for any advice.

It'll be worth replacing the bearing visable once the gearbox, clutch and flywheel. Its the small one at the back of the block, sorry I don't know its name or able to pull up a link to real oem as I'm only using a laptop and my bently manual is yet to arrive. I'll bet Will will beat me to the name or pic.
Oh hang on I posted a pic on the be. forum......
:bolt:

Its the bearing in picture seven bud.

phew

Today could be a good day. I'll just keep away from here and await Chris's reply. :D

Thanks for the advice, I'll start checking all this. I have to finish building my ramps first....
