hi guys, took my e30 out at the weekend but, when cornering hard or in tight bends it feels like its going to lose control i had the steering rack changed about 9 months ago but i'm not sure what could be wrong. its not leaking any power steering fluid, but the steering feels tight when going round tight bends at speed, which never used to happen.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The steering should feel tight with feedback to let you know what the tyres are doing.

Have you checked the track rod ends etc

Not too sure what's going on here, you say the steering is 'wooly',which I assume means that there is play in it,then you say it feels tight,so no play in it?

Was the rack a s/h one or a new/re-con one?

it was a second hand one, sorry its hard to explain but if i,m driving at normal speeds its not bad but certain tight bends it tightens up but does feel like its steering properly cause i've almost lost it a few times, but it used to handle extremely well before

i know it should feel tight when its gripping, but it feels like some kind of resistance, and like its notsteering in the right direction

Initial thoughts are the rubber guibo in the linkage, these are a known failure item, with the bonnet open, watch the steering shaft whilst a helper waggles the steery wheel, there should be no play at all.

Hello
Don't want to hijack the thread. But i have a similar problem, i checked that rubber guibo in the rack.
At slow speed it's fine, but the faster i go it feels kinda "Disconnected" the faster i go..
At 80 on the motorway round a slight bend its kinda scary.
Hard to explain but at centre it feels "Light" and wooly. but stiffens up the further you turn the wheel.
New ATF oil last week i thought this would sort it as the stuff in there before was horrid.

Could this be some kind of bush problem of some kind ( Im not too clued up of suspension components)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

I was having problems with mine, going round slow tight bends, it felt like the car was jumping or sliding sideways at the front end. Put in for MOT and I had a knackered front ball joint, and the front rubbers were gone too. I would suspect a bush or ball joint or trackrod end somewhere will give those symptoms.

Replaced both the front wishbones, and all bushes and it feels like a new car again.

I have exactly the same problem, it is definatley the steering linkage that goes from the column to the rack. This has worn causing the play in the steering. i can see when someone turns the wheel there is loads of play in this joint.

maybe your pas pump is failing or gone, i had issues with steering, i spent about £250, replaced lower arms, bushes, arb bushes, track rods, got new tyres balanced and tracked, and replaced the rubber guibo in the linkage as it had split and was creasing up when turning the wheel
