Very oily - Help required

Just had a quick look over my new touring 2.5... Swapped it for my 318i...

Thought I would check the oil, filters etc etc. As was told it had fresh oil in etc.

Hadn't... No worries...

But had the air filter and box out,bit dirty but nothing major, but the afm was quite oily, aswell as the rubber hoses section between the afm and the throttle body, so assuming that is too.

Car drives fine, just wondering what would cause this and what I need to do?

Gonna give it a good service once I have bought all the missus xmas presents and have the cash spare. Hopefully nothing wrong with it that cant be fixed easy enough. Just to blast throught the winter so not too bothered about it.

Jim, with my experience with the M20, the valve cover vent tube that connects to the throttle body sometimes collects oil.

You can clean it and the port on the TB out but theres no saying it won't happen again.

Be careful if you do remove the hose to clean it, though, due to where it is (on top of VC) it tends to get heated and thus brittle after a while. Good chance it could crack on you so maybe get a new one, probably like £10 or less ($12 in the US)

Nothing to worry about though. I wouldn't spray anything into the AFM to clean it, just wipe down the wet areas with a rag avoiding the sensor itself.

Do you have a good idle?

Thanks Brewcity, i'm gonna hopefully have a good look this weekend and just give everything a clean with some carb/engine cleaner. Havent really got much spare cash at the minute so things are having to wait which I would normally just do on a new motor.

Jim, fit a oil catch tank it will stop the oil from clogging up the throttle body and AFM for about £25.

Where abouts would that be fitted in David? I'm assuming it would be connected inline somewhere?

There you go Jim, Connect vent pipe from cam cover to inlet of catch tank and from outlet to throttle body basically between vent pipe and throttle body its amazing how much fluid it collects.

Yes Jim that's the one, the oil gunge is common as the engine is supposed to burn and blow it out of the exhaust pipe but some of the residue finds its way into the AFM, throttle body and idle valve, the catch tank will help stop this and the idle will be better.
