I've been doing some work on my e30, my drivers door card is off, however I'm 99% sure the petrol release cap wasn't on the door. Now I've totally lost it... I know this sounds like a stupid question, but where the HELL IS IT?!?!

Petrol cap release will be included in the circuit for the central locking(if fitted).

Nothing to do with the door card.

Hmm..
There isn't a petrol cap release. It locks when your car locks. When the cars unlocked the petrol cap will unlock.
Sounds like you may have a dodgy petrol cap locking bit. You can access it by going in the boot, behind the right side carpet.

Oh sh!t, I remember now my central lockings broke too! So I'm guessing I'll have to fix that before being able to put petrol in... sorry for my incompetence, I haven't really drove it yet, I just assumed there was a release. Now I remember though it locks with the doors.

you can open it from the boot though if its stuck locked. Remove the carpet and you'll see the locking solinoid, from memory i think you can just pull the locking pin back.

There's a slot provided in the fabric of the liner for the purpose.
