Check your door mirrors.

There's a relay, driven by a switch in the door, that diverts power from one fuse to another depending on whether the door is open or not. Have a listen, and as you open and close your door you should hear a clicking noise coming from the glovebox area.

This change in circuits also powers the mirrors and sunroof, hence your problem.

A quick search yields this, unsurprisingly:

well i got no spent fuses, and everything works fine with either door open, just all stops when your driving! most frustrating! i'm wondering if its something like a faulty door switch or other item just as daft. but then the blower has packed up too .. . heeeeeeeelp!!!!!

have you looked at that link I posted? It quite clearly states that the blower is also affected by this issue.

Check the smallest connection on the starter motor.

sorry guys my replies have been a bit jumbled up, damned internet!

brian, i think i know whats happened, i changed the starter motor the other week and its been since i did that. the only diffeerence between the two units i swapped was the size and the new one's small connecter is 30 amp instead of 25 that was the output of the old one. will check the connection in a min and see that its still tight. ok, how strange that the starter runs the windows and things though.
gotta do the water pump this weekend too !!!

right, the piece of wire across the relay pins is makin the windows work but not the fan. i can hear the relay working around the glove box area when i open and close the door switch so thats ok.

question 1, how long can i leave the wire in as a substitute for the relay? (without causing any damage to the car?)
question 2, is just a nice new relay gonna fix everything??? lol

There's nothing wrong with any relay. The problem is with whatever you've done with the starter motor.
If it had different connections, it's not the same.
What engine/
What age of car?
What did the replacement motor come from? Including age?

ooo right, the replacement starter came from an older 325 from a breakers yard. it has spade connections and is slightly bigger than the one i replaced with it.
after changing it though i still had the same problem so a new battery sorted it all out in the end. so would it be best to stick the old starter back on?

Sounds like you've fitted a pre facelift starter motor.
Ideally, refit your original motor, or alternatively, remove the 4mm ring terminal from the end of the green/black wire (under its outer sheath), and replace it with a 8mm ring terminal, and then fit this terminal to the inner, large (13mm nut) terminal on the starter solenoid, the one with a rigid or flexible strap to the terminal on the motor body.
