just need the loom and switches which is usually quite expensive about a £100ish then just plug it in to the main white box and wire it under your carpet to the seats and cut out holes for the switches

I have a pair of decent BMW switches for you £30 posted, the loom is still available new from BMW for about £80. The handbrake console is scored underneath for the switches, the loom plugs into the white accessory socket, which is in behind the glove box.

Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?

Should be able to get a loom on eBay / traders on here for £15-£20.

You don't have ti go under the carpet (though it's tidier) you can route it under the centre console then down either side of the transmission tunnel.
