E30 318IS Flywheel & Clutch Upgrage
Moderator: martauto
I've not fitted one myself so somebody else may want to answer that one. You won't need to drill anything but the flywheel will need machining down to lighten it (the whole point of fitting one in the first place). I think you also need the M20 spacer to go between the flywheel and the engine output flange.
rust never sleeps
Don't need that at all. Its only for automatic cars.MrWhite wrote:I've not fitted one myself so somebody else may want to answer that one. M42 rightness above 6500rpm, nobody can hear you scream
^^Cleared up, thanks Dave.
You'd struggle to find a dual mass flywheel on an M40 or M42 in the UK. Where are you based?-Jelko- wrote:But isnt flywheel lighter on m20,doesnt m40 have dualmass one?

From Croatia,my 316i is 1/1989,bought from Slovenia when it was new.I checked by the VIN and it does have dualmass flywheel,so i guess this would be an little performance upgradeMrWhite wrote:^^Cleared up, thanks Dave.

If you fitted a 4.5kg JBR fly or similar, 4th gear would pull as well as 3rd gear at the moment.
Might be an idea to fit a different engine to the 1.6 too along with the flywheel though :p

That is plan ofcourse but since i got new set of m20 clutch and rest parts i need i will put it on 1,6...my throw out bearing is rattling like hell thats why i will do this, also searching for good m42,i dont think m40b16 will destroy m20 clutch till i find good oneDave_M3 wrote:Might be an idea to fit a different engine to the 1.6 too along with the flywheel though :p

Rite guys i have decided with most less faffing about and going out your way to buy new bits and get changing away is to get the standard flywheel lightened down to a reasonable weight. I have come across vision racing developments and build pictures of their lightened flywheels however i did contact them but i have in my bad luck i have had no reply in 3weeks now and coz i am in need of getting the parts soonish i was wondering if there is any other company that deal with the same thing?
Are there any other companies in the UK that sell the lightened flywheel for the M42?
Regards
Jazz

Take a photo of what you want and your standard flywheel to any decent machine shop and they will sort it for you, anything from £10 in the lunch break upwards. When the machining is done, off to an engine rebuilders/reconditioners and they will balance it (this bit is optional but sensible)
For sale - E30 320i racer project - sold.

Providing you're using the e30 M20 flywheel, yes. I think.mykez69 wrote:So, a 318is engine, out of an e36 is, bolted into an e30, with the 325i clutch, needs a m42 starter with the m20 pinion?
