Hi,
It definetly sounds as though the seals have worn out in the master cylinder especially as the foot pedal drops to the floor. The pressure you are experiencing is the vacuum releasing.

Has any work recently been carried out on the braking system, like brake pad or brake shoe change? If so has the caliper pistons been pushed back reversing the seals in the master cylinder.
Have you checked for any leaks on the system?
If your car has rear brake shoes is there any signs of fluid leaking at the back plate on the inside of the rear wheels? If so the wheel cylinders are leaking.
Is there any signs of fluid leaking from flexible brake hoses or hydraulic pipes? If so replace as necessary.
If none of the above, replace the master cylinder and bleed system through with new dot 4 brake fluid. Start bleeding with the right handside rear then left rear, then right front and finally the left front. You may have to do this 2-3 times if using the jam jar and tube method

Good luck

master cylinder for sure.
Its a bolt on part. Simply ubolt the old one, carefully remove, and bolt on the new one.
Remove as much fluid as you can before you start as brake fluid is nasty to paintwork. Its a messy job, but not beyond the realms of DIY. Obviously the brakes will need bleeding properly once the new master cylinder is fitted.

Before you start this job make sure you can get all the bleed screws undone.

Yes,you will have an M40 engine.
I use an oil syringe to suck fluid out of the brake master fluid holder thingy, then you need an 11mm spanner for the brake pipe connections(two on ABS cars and three on non-ABS cars)and finally a 13mm for the master's nuts to the servo.Mind the starter motor connections when tackling the servo fitting!
