help with flywheel prefacelift 325i

hi, ive been having a nightmare for nearly a month now with wrong diagnosis wasting money etc etc, my car decided to die and now theres no spark it was diagnosed as an ecu fault but after speaking to a member on this forum it turned out to be the flywheel, trigger sensor or something along those lines, apparently a commone fault with early 325's ? :( im requiring a flywheel for a prefacelift 325i, i need the pin aswell, im not a machanic, i need to be sure i get the right bits as im only a postie and dont have money to waste, any help on labour and costs would be most appreciated i have about 400 to spend, i thought about upgrading the motronic to the later version as it doesnt use the flywheel, so ive been told ! im at a loose end on what to do my cars been in the garage for month and i just want it fixed as im slowly loosing faith with the garage thats suppose to be fixing it. ive seen one on ebay but im not sure if its complete ! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... Hi there,

Just to let you know if you can't find help from anyone here (which I doubt), let me know exactly what you need as I have an early 325 engine which I'm currently converting to facelift spec to fit my Touring, and all early sensors not used on facelift engines are surplus to requirements. I already have the engine in there, though, so no chance of getting the flywheel out, but any sensor that can be removed you're welcome to it.

The only reason I'm not proposing it directly is my location... as you can see, I'm in Portugal. It will work out much cheaper if you can get help locally. If not, drop me a pm and we'll see if I can get you sorted with the appropriate kit.

The 'pin' is pressed into the flywheel and, yes, without it the car will not run. Indeed , it was a fairly common issue back in the day . As you know the flywheel is unique to early motronic cars, so you MUST get the correct one.
Bearing in mind the extra labour involved in replacing the flywheel, it may be worth considering changing to later motronic, all the bits are readily and cheaply available and you will no longer have to worry about flywheels and chocolate 073 ECUs ! :)

WHy do you need a flywheel? Surely all you need is the sensor itself.. I cant see the flywheel loosing the pin pressed into it... Much more likley the sensor has packed it in.

And yes with the later motronic you need high impedance injectors... (just learnt that myself)

Alas , the pin detaching itself from the flywheel is indeed MUCH more common that the sensor dying ! :(

Get out of here!! would not of thought that... Is there a way of checking the pin is still attached to the flywheel without pulling the motor? Peek through the inspection port perhaps?

Yes, by removing the metal inspection plate , it is fairly easy to check for the 'pin' . It is usually found in bits along with other debris resulting from its demise :(

im not a machanic but all this is true, the pin does seperate itself normally when the engine is being revved high through the gears, well thats what i experienced, becareful as its easy to diagnose as and electrical fault and waste shit loads of money, unless your fully clued up about e30's

At one time on here there was at least one of these a week for months the flywheel throwning the trigger key

It's well worth at this stage going under the car with the Mig welder and giving the pin to flywheel joint a quick burst or weld. This happened to a 525e I had.
