After reading march109 post about the track touring he is breaking he metioned that the 325i engine was running a 320 gearbox. What's the advantages of doing this and also dis-advantages.

Advantage: Slightly better gear ratios, especially between second and third.
Disadvantage: Box is weaker.
Note that each has to be used with its matching propshaft.

It's been covered here loads of times.

The 320i 'box has virtually identical ratios to the 325i "Sport" close ratio box. The difference is that 1st is lower (3.72 compared to 3.35).

If you're planning to use the 320i 'box on a 325i, you'll need to use the 320i prop as well as the 'box casing is shorter.

Shameless plug here:

As above, though I've never experienced a gearbox failure even with the 220bhp 2.8L M20 mated to a stock 325i Sport gearbox I also own.

Whilst I don't doubt the 320i gearbox is a weaker box since it was designed for use with the less powerfull engine I doubt in real world terms it would ever make a difference. They are also much much cheaper to replace, the sport boxes carry the sport premium, the stock 325i gearboxes arn't able to boast the better gearbox ratios either.
