Hi

Glad you like the information here.

If it's going fine on the 10w-40 semi, I would stick with that.

The recommended oil for the diff is the SAF-XO. It may just need a change rather than thre being any problem and the SAF-XO is so well proven in BMW's, I would stick with that.

Halfords do a 20W50 mineral oil. I have tried in my E28 and it seems to be O.K but with slightly lower fuel economy.

Too thick, try a lower viscosity such as 10w-40.

What oil would be recommended for a M42 with about 80k on it? I've just bought 5L of Fuchs Titan XTR 10w40, good enough?

It's not ideal, but it's not the worst oil they could have used. I would rather use a 5w-40, but it should be okay

Hi Oilman, thanks for the advice, I've been looking on your website for 5w 40 as stated above but there only seems to be one brand and its not one of the three you recomended.
I'm one of those naughty people who only covers a couple of thousand a year and when I do that a can be quite vigorous, can you please advise me which you think is most suitable out of those available on your site, thanks alot.

Here are the 5w-40s we have

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Gulf Formula G, Fuchs Supersyn and Mobil Synt S are good, cheaper alternatives.

Oilman can you reccomend me a oil for my diff and gearbox. I have a 1989 325i convertible, the mlleage is 166,000. Im 90% sure there is a whine from the diff and have been told to change the oil first as this somerimes stops the whine.

My car does NOT have a lsd diff.

Thanks.

For the diff, go for the Silkolene Syn 5, Redline 75w-90 NS, Castrol SAF-XO or Fuchs Sintopoid.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-673-75w-90.aspx

You need an MTF for the gearbox and I would go with the Redline MTL, Amsoil MTF or Fuchs Sintofluid. The Millers EP 75w-80 is a good cheaper alternative

Carlube is pretty basic to say the least. You can either go for a good 10w-40 semi synthetic with regular changes or 5w-40 synthetic if you want the best.

Hi

A 5w-40 is the best choice

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XFS, Fuchs Supersyn and Mobil Synt S are good, cheaper alternatives.

As a budget choice, a 10w-40 will be fine and I would either go for the Fuchs XTR, Millers XSS or Motul 6100

Hi
Oilman
Unsure what to do i brought my 91 iS with 125,000miles checked the oil and it seemed it had just gone in there. 3000miles later i would like to do a oil change. The car runs great no tappet noises at all which is unusual on a iS.
The current oil in there is a Q8 10-40w....... i don't know what it is ? (doesn't say on the box) ie fully synthetic or mineral?

Any advice would be ace.
cheers.

Hi

Q8 aren't great, just average stuff, so that could be why it's only taken 3000 miles, or it could be because it may not have been well looked after. I'd suggest dropping the oil out, putting in a cheap mineral oil, run it for a day or so, then change that for the good oil. That should remove any muck that may have built up and keep the oil cleaner for longer.

I would use a 5w-40 synthetic when you're ready.

Cheers the oil still looks "Clean" and inside the oil cap looks clean aswell. The car had only done 9k since 2007.
Will replace it tomorrow. would you recommend the fully syn castrol 10-40w they sell in asda for £10 for 4litres? or not to bother?
Cheers for the advice. :D
