Guys,
Ive never asked this question but it is something that ive always wanted to know.
Whats the life span of a automatic transmissions on these E30's and what happens if they do die?
I know with manual gear boxes or clutches they can be replaced, but ive never known or heard of a automatic gearbox that has failed or needed replacing.
Autobox/transmission question

Down to complete luck, if you look after it it will outlive an engine.
This guys videos are worth a watch, although i doubt he's putting that back together.
The ones on alternators and starters are pretty good too.

I was thinking about fitting a switchable autobox to project cabbie.
The lazy 2.7 is perfectly suited to the way an autobox works. Then Andyboy commented along the lines of,'selectable auto with possible faults or bullet proof Getrang manual, know which I would choose'.....
I stayed with the manual!

Thats madness,
If you have a auto gearbox leak u need to take ur whole gearbox apart and replace the seal, that must cost a bomb on labour.

According to part two of that video its your damper valve ooh err, get your spanners out and have a go.
There is NO nucleus.
Well there is allot that can go wrong, and mostly everytime you need to take it down.
First you have clogged filter, wont go in gear and makes a sound.
Then you have torque converter error, the auto will act lazy in all gears.
From there you have broken clutch pack's, all from no revers, no brake on low gear, no forward etc etc etc.
Then you have valve problems like "aeberbach" you can drive with this for years and have no problem, it can also go away.
My gearbox has changed oil pump, torque converter, 3 or 4 clutch packs, oil filter. And it still isn't good as new
But it works. Rough going in and out of 4th gear.
It takes around 2 hours to get it down for a newbie, 1 hour for a pro.
If you dont over rev it in N or P it should last long, and also if you don't do burnouts.

Perhaps a small exaggeration but under strong acceleration it's far from pleasant. Most of all I hate the way it drags the idle down while waiting at the lights. Engine management compensates of course but it feels lumpy and has a very deep bass hum I hate. Sometimes I tap it up into N and imagine what life would be like with a nice manual...spence_star wrote:LOL
