My 318 passed it MOT yesterday, which was great. However today the bloody thing won't start. It cranks over fine, but won't fire. I checked the fuel line and there is no fuel pumping through the lines. I also can't hear the pump priming, I've checked the fuses which all seem to be fine and swapped the relays round.
I've taken up the rear seats and taken the oval cover off the top of the fuel pump. I can see two plugs a three pin and a two pin, I guess one plug is for the fuel gauge and one is a power supply to the pump . Which is which? and what pins am I expecting to see power though?
Is the an inertia switch for the fuel pump in case of a crash?
Any ideas welcome. Thanks Robin

E30's don't use anything as primitive as an inertia switch. The engine ECU integrates pulses from the crank position sensor, and uses these to control the fuel pump relay.
First of all, check fuse 11. If that's OK, take off the wiring cover on the bulkhead, and locate the fuel pump relay on the LH side - normally orange. Remove it, and use a short piece of wire to link together pins 30 and 87 of the relay's socket. Pin numbers are marked on the relay.
This should make the fuel pump run all of the time; even without the ignition being on.
If it runs, you should easily hear it.

Sorry just re-read that, I mean a switch that in the event of an accident turns the fuel pump off. Many cars have them lots of Fords have them in the boot, Citroen and Peugeot have them under the bonnet. My old Sierra was on coilovers and I would often hit a pot hole too hard it would cut power to the fuel pump, a little annoying lol!Brianmoooore wrote:E30's don't use anything as primitive as an inertia switch. I guess the E30 doesn't have one?
