what milage cambelt change? m40 316i?

just wondering what milage should the belt be changed at? it was done at 60 or 70 k it has now 136k so is it well overdue?? car sold now only to be collected. told the fella its due. but just worried how likly could it break??

yours needs doind asap if that was the last time it was done

oh not good. any chance i could take off timing cover and inspect it? or would it just be waste for there would be no sigh of wear?

mine was done in 1999 at 81.000miles and I did it again this winter with 162000 and the belt was in a very good condition...probably depends the make of the belt and luck?

it depends how it's been driven too. in theory an engine can be sat at idle and do a billion revolutions and the car will have done 0 miles. a lot of stop / start driving can be a lot worse for an engine than many times the miles at a constant speed.

idle / very low revs are the worst for cambelts as there's quite a lot of shock load going through them as the valve springs fight against or spring round the cam, the motion smooths out at higher revs
