when driving, my differential whines/whirs quite noticeably. i was wondering if there's some kind of fluid or adjustment that i could make to quiet it down -- i've already replaced the fluid

yep, adjust it for a new one as diff rebuilds are expensive.. unless it's limited slip then its just come to the end of its lifespan.

If it is a limited slip one at the end of its lifespan, send me a message, as I need a LSD for rebuilding to rally spec.

Cheers

I've heard a fluid change can make a lot of difference?

whining while driving in a straight line is usually the bearings and a relatively easy for me to do - debatable as to whether it's worthwhile on an open diff though.

a whining LSD is almost always saveable - even if the bearings and gears are shot as it can be rebuild with an open diff to donate parts. a dodgy LSD pack won't make any noice while driving in a straight line as it's not doing any slipping at all

ahh, it's a 325es, 1986. it has a LSD apparently but i live in the US so im guessing a garage would charge me an arm and a leg, if they would even do it.....?
So either way is it likely that it IS at the end of it's lifespan?? it functions fine, the noise is the only issue..

if it's a LSD, it's worth looking at properly - even just for the resale value.

do you have a local gearbox rebuilder that could take a look at it?

new plates can be sourced from driveandtraction.co.uk seals from BMW and bearings from any bearing supplier or BMW.
