Hey everyone, the engine in my 1990 318i auto needs replaced and was wondering if a 1993 518i m40 engine with a manual box would go into my 318i auto without any problems ?

At a guess the sump would require swapping, not too sure if the E34 gearbox would be an easy fit,but an E30 type is cheap enough s/h.
Be a few bits to sort out regarding the autobox electrics, but nothing too major.

Is the '93 engine an M40 or M43? Looks similar but chain driven, probably a bit more work to swap than the M40 engine.
For sale - E30 320i racer project - sold.

Its a 1993 m40 engine that had a manual gearbox and im looking to put only the engine from that car straight into my 318i auto, would that be a straight forward swap without any problems occuring ?

thanks everyone

Just the engine will be more or less a straight swap. Use all of the bolt on bits from your old engine, including the auto flywheel. Its very likely that both bits of the sump and oil pick up pipe (you will see it when you take the sump off) will have to be swapped over as well if the 518 has the oil pan behind the crossmember like the E36 does, but its only ten minutes to do.
