hi guys!
heres whats happening,
I came into my drive 2 nights ago as per usual, turned to reverse the car.
Selected reverse...
reversed back...
clutched in to disengauge reverse gear and then heard a thud (like a knock from the rear of the car)
tried dipping the clutch in reverse a few times hearing the same thud, the noise has returned several times sometimes during driving and changing down gear... and is also apparent when my handbrake is on and i dip the clutch in reverse
was talkin to a friend tonight that has had bm's all his life and told me that theres a 'donut like bush' that is near the prop (sorry for being vague, or totally inaccurate but am by no means a mechanic) that gets worn down and starts to knock, and the part is near Ԛ£100 to replace... would this fit the bill to the problem i am experiencing above?? have done some research into this on the site and can't really locate a similar problem.
read about diff and other bushes so I'm going to have these checked over. Is there anything else anybody can think of? or anybody experienced a similar problem??
hope this explanation will ring a bell with someone
thanx in advance guys
Sy
annoying thud from rear of car, plz help

It could be your rear top mounts, i had the same problem last year, knocking noises coming from behind the back seats, sort of in the boot area. After taking out the boot lining and taking the rubber bung off the top mounts i noticed the bush had completely worn away and my shock absorber was coming thru' into the boot
Went to BMW and got 2 new ones, cant remember how much Ԛ£ now but not expensive
.
Good luck with it.

Thought I'd already replied to this one yesterday!
From your description, I don't think it's naylor04's top mounts in this case, as that's more of an annoying fast thumping while you drive along.
Most likely is your friend's donut - very easy to inspect once you get under the car - it's right at the back of the gearbox, bolted to the front of the propshaft. New one costs about Ԛ£25 from GSF or Eurocarparts. Second candidate is the mounting for the joint in the middle of the propshaft. Bit more difficult to inspect as it's hidden by a cover above the exhaust.
Other possibilities are something as simple as the exhaust hitting something, as the engine moves the other way from normal in reverse when you let the clutch up.
Problems with the diff and driveshafts are rare on E30s.
