Just wondering if we are going to benefit from a K&N on a m44 engine?

I know in many many cases a K&N does nothing really apart from make a slightly different note of sound.

So, K&N or standard air box filter?

I think it's more or less proven that the standard original airbox set-up is best.

Ok thank you. I know most of the time that the standard box is the best but just wanted to clarify really.

I have a 318is with a m44 engine in, So which standard airbox should I be buying?

You could try a K&N panel filter in a standard airbox. Supposedly a bit less restrictive...

Seems a good idea as you get to keep the original location of the box etc which is no doubt in the best possible place.

I just don't know which standard airbox I need lol I have got so many questions about so many things lol

I don't want to fit the E30 318is airbox to the m44 engine if that will restrict me.

Please excuse the terms I use, this is my first BMW.

You have an M44 in an E30? Did you fit it?

An E30 318iS airbox on an M44 wont restrict it, it was designed for the M42 which is essentualy the same engine -100cc.

I didn't fit it, the person who I bought the car off fitted it, I'm just going by hear say of what he has told me.

He said he has played with the timing to give it more power? I think what he meant if it is possible that the location of the power band has changed.

I have no idea, I take these kid of things with a pinch of salt.

I need to talk to an expert! lol

Thanks for the replies guys, I know how annoying it must be with a noob asking loads of daft questions lol

There is a small mod you can do to adjust the inlet cam timing by 5 degrees I believe although it seems to be one of these things some people 'notice' and others don't, I wouldn't get too excited but a rolling road run will soon tell you 8)

Fitting K&N cone filters to M42's and I imagine for that matter the M44's effects the torque for the worse plus you suck in all that hot engine bay air. That said I do have one fitted to my track car

I completely understand about the warm air thing into the induction. When i was younger and thought K&N's gave car power like vodka and redbulls give me a perfomance upgrade LOL i used to make a shield to try and keep the hot air from drifting in.

Then I guess i grew up and realised they don't do a lot LOL

So my problem number 1 has been answered I can get the correct airbox.

Thanks mate, much appreciated.

Next Problem: prop shaft, rear tail light, weird noise from suspension when i turn into full lock, floor carpet (does the floor carpet save much weight by not having any?) Bonnet prop, centre box to silent the chavvy sounding exhaust.

Oh the joys!

a proper after market airbox type filter not an open cone filter with a proper cold air feed will be beneficial

Enclosed Induction kit with good cold air feed I would have thought would be better than a standard box.

There will be no significant gains from using any aftermarket air filter/box on any standard engined E30, provided that the OE system is fitted with a clean genuine filter, and the aftermarket box doesn't incorporate a turbocharger
