First thing i would check is the rubber boot on the air intake, the ICV and blue temp sensor.

Bet you its down to the fuel going off through age. get some fresh stuff in there to mix with the old and give it a blast!

How long are you running it and are you using all the 5 litres of fuel? If not running it for long you will just be sucking through old fuel and crud from the bottom of the tank....

If its not that I would check your idle control valve, like Kam said. If you find it coughing and spluttering when you rev it it might be the rubbert boot - as you you rev the engine, the centrifugal force will cause the engine to rock pulling it away from the boot...if there are any cracks in the boot they will then open and draw air in and the car will splutter. I had this happen to me on my old E34 518i when the boot failed....I had to pull away really slowly, any sudden acceleration and the car just kangarooed.

The other thing I would check are your leads and dizzy cap? Is there any dampness in there is the arm and cap in good order? If your leads are old and damp then they won't be insulating properly meaning that you won't get a strong spark.... Again I had this happen when I first bought my 327i (then a 320i)... In the damp sometimes the car would not start....or it would run badly. Spraying duck oil/wd40 on the leads will help temporarily insulate them but if that fixes it you will need new leads...

Hope this helps. :)
