If i have bought an e28 large case lsd accidentally what are my options for fitting to my e30? I have removed the back plates off of both, to look at the actual diffs look about the same size... the plate off my e30 is clearlt too small for the lsd...

what do i do???

Yes, its a 210 diff, 188 is the largest that will fit an E30 without modifying the rear beam

There are, in esscence, three sizes of diff that you ave to choose from
Small case
Medium Case (188 casing like came off your car)
Large Case (210 casing like came off that E28)

Medium case is the largest you can fit to your car without modifying the beam as DanThe quite rightly said. You CAN fit a large case, but to be honest, its not worth the ballache!
The internals from that diff are no good to you either, as, as you can see the crown wheel and pinion are too big to be transplanted. You will need a smaller casing diff unfortunately.

Thanks chaps, the knowledge of zoners never fails to amaze me!

ok, so going with a medium case (188) casing, which is the tallest ratio diff I can get? I need ideally 3.25 or there abouts...

all herlp appreciated!

Ps, anyone need a large case 3.07 LSD? HAHA

The car has coverd 126k but I had it rebuilt due to whineing about 2k ago. It has been sat in the garage for over a year now. It will be going into e30 il just have to fabricate the rear beam to mount it

Loads of 188 ratios, unfortunately most are in non compatible cases so the internals will need rebuilding into your case

Off the top of my head - 2.93 - 3.07 - 3.15 - 3.23 - 3.25 - 3.38

M3's had 3.15 and / or 3.25 AFAIK and would be a bolt on swap.
ratios wise, E25 525e (2.93) and auto 325's would be worth looking at. not sure on the ratios of the auto 325i's but they must have been in the low 3.xx's

if you can get a good M3 LSD, that's be a good plan as otherwise you can swap the ratios over but it will need building up properly with the gear meshing, bearing preaload and lash all setting correctly.

if you do find the ratios you need and a medium case LSD, i can build it up, refresh the LSD pack if needed (i can also upgrade the locking while i'm at it :D ) and replace seals and bearings etc for you. winkeye

Do you guys have 325e's over there? Those have 2.93 ratio diffs... here in America they come with 2.79 for early models, and 2.93 for later models. That would be a bolt on solution. And, as mentioned, e28 5er diffs will fit as long as it is Type188... they came with low ratios too (2.93, 3.15, 3.25 etc)

Our auto 325s came with 3.73s, not sure if your eurospec 3ers come with lower ratios...
