This is much harder than auto to manual.
obviuously, torque converter, autobox, prop and diff (for best results)
autobox ecu + loom
automatic tps
automatic engine loom
automatic bmw ecu (or maybe just chip)
automatic gear selector and surround

Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?

Easiest way would be to find a rotten donor car, your manual 'box will sell on to help offset costs as well!

It's only more difficult if you go for a switchable (electronic) auto box.
Only parts required for an ordinary auto is the gearbox with torque convertor and cross member, prop shaft, and the selector lever assembley complete with its wiring looms.
Ideally you'd remove the clutch pedal and replace the brake pedal with the wider one, but at a push, the clutch pedal could just be cut off.

..........and an auto radiator with oil cooler!
All the bits should be readily available from another zoner, who's just converted the other way.
