Steering rack or pump failure?

Hi, My 320i cab is making a grating noise on full lock. Initially I thought it was the wheels that were catching, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I'm not sure if it is the pump or rack that has failed. Would it be worthwhile changing both as there is some play in the steering but the linkage seems to be ok.
