320i hiccups!.
Moderator: martauto
Hi, 1"ve a 1989 320i, that from idling, you put your foot on the accelerator and it always misfires. The revs then drop below idling them back to normal. It is apain when trying to set off from a junction. The local dealer set the system up and said he"d set it up a shade weaker, and it ran much better for about 1000 miles then back to its hiccups. I was told to replace the air flow meter, or try to clean it outas this is the usual cause for this model. Is this correct, what do i do to clean it out? The"re an expensive item if its not that to blame. any ideas would be appreciated.
welcome peleno
i think i can speak for most 2.0 owners when i say that they suffer from hiccups,
i have these "flatspots" also, when pulling from lights i have to juice that little bit more to stop "bouncing" away from the lights, or riding the clutch out to not cause the delay in pull off
it bugs me too, the remedys are varied, both in extent and expense
there are loads of threads on this very subject, and can be found with the search option, but may take a bit of looking for as we all call things by so many different names
but watch this space, as someone will deffo know the ins and outs of this one

Check the throttle position switch is adjusted correctly, with the engine off put your ear close to the throttle body and slowly open the throttle. If it is correct you will hear a very faint 'click' as the throttle plate begins to move.
If not then slacken the 2 screws underneath the throttle body and turn the switch until it clicks as soon as the throttle begins to open.
Also it could be the induction hose is split underneath.
Cheers,
Iain T

I've got exactly the same problem with my 320i, just did a quick search of the forums as johnono suggested and came back with this one. Thought it might help, good luck!!

Mine had the same problem
Changing the AFM did diddly squat!
Mine also had a tendency to flood at the first oportunity when starting so I sussed that might be due to to little air - ICV not working properly. (Theres a thread on one of the US sites about this)
I eventually changed the ICV and I think I've fixed it, but I need to run it for a bit longer to make sure.
By the way, there were no problems with the old ICV that I could detect but this seems to have fixed it.
hope this helps
