Service. Air filter, plugs. Maybe the catalyst is on the way out.

If you get the work done within a certain amount of time then they should give you a free retest.

Ps mine failed on emissions last week but because its a 1990 car it passed.

The MOT tester tried to put the emissions failer report on the computer and there wasnt a option for it cause of the year of the car so mine passed. It read 0.64 when a pass is lower than 0.30

7 days for free re-test if you take it away, 10 days if it stays in the garage who did the test IIRC.

you should not have to pay a partial retest fee.. it should be free if you return within 7 days :O

most retests are free, to get past emissions u could turn down the mixture with the screw on the airflow meter, but ONLY FOR THE MOT, tbh you are better finding what the problem is and fixing it.. thats what an mot is for in the end of the day

if the plugs, filter etc are all fresh and it's till just over, tweak the idle mixture screw on the AFM, that's what it's there for, tuning the idle mixture to the correct value. it's just an adjustable air bleed past the AFM flap. there's a good chance a previous owner has tried to 'turn up the power' and messed about with it. If it's set right at the MOT and it runs well afterwards (should run better) then leave it there!

high CO can also be a symptom of a worn / sticky air flow meter. giving it a good clean out with carb cleaner and a little WD40 if it's sticky can help.

i am sure the car is too old for emissions to be of an issue, phone the ministry to confirm, you could put a petrol additive in, it worked on my dads car when it failed.

8O 8O  OMG what a load of .... sprouted about retest procedures.

just read the following link for the proper info on retests....

http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/internet/htdo ... 000101.htm

As for emissions, then a cheap service may well do the trick, ie air filter and plugs. The mixture screw is the last thing to be touched. A clean out with carb cleaner may well help as well.

@ euan - It is only pre 1975 cars that do not have a metered emission check. So unless you run a very early E21 or an 02 then a metered check it will be.
