I am servicing my 320i and wondering which oil is best suited. I checked an application guide and looked and found different opinions.
Commas' guide says semi-sythetic 15W-40. I would have thought 10w-40 for scotlands colder climate tho?
Best oil for 320i?

Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?

10/40 semi as approved by His Moooreship.
I can't see anything wrong with going to a 5/40 if you want to go fully synth but there's not really any point. You'll just burn more oil on startup.
The key is the 40 in the second number - that is the correct viscosity for the engine at operating temp. 0/5/10/15 is the viscosity when cold (ie startup). The lower numbers give more protection for the first few minutes but 10/40 semi is better than the stuff these engines were designed for, and can run 300k on (with regular changes).
