i have just put an e36 rack onto my touring and insted of using a rubber guibo thingy i machined up a solid one from some ally bar kicking around the workshop. the result is fantastic really real great positive steering!
when i rock the steering wheel from left to right i can hear a knocking noise that sounds like it is coming from the steering wheel. and when driving along the road and i drive over bumps it makes loads of noise. the funny thing is that there is no play in the rack and i cant feel any in the column either.
this is really starting to bug me now as driving down the road it just knocks like mad over all the bumps.
any ideas????

hi!
no its not hitting anything... i did have problems getting the e36 column to fit around the m42 exhaust manifold. but i used the e30 insted and there were no issues with clearance...
as far as the pics are concerned i have lost my camera and im using a retro phone as i got run over in the pit lane in monza by my stupid french driver the other week and had it in my pocket..
note to self: dont do a pitstop for a french twat!! LOL

The only thing I can imagine is that you have play somewhere in the steering or suspension and that the sound is now transmitted through the solid column instead of dying at the guibo. But you should have felt it before if it is to the point of clunking...
As for the phone, english drivers are definitely better - one of mine drove a whole FFord race with his phone in his pocket. (only at the beginning, it ended up behind the pedals somehow, without jamming, thank god!)
