Firstly big Hello,
Ok I have a e30 325i msport 1990.
I was driving along and the car just cut out, I tried to start it but it was behaving like there is no fuel had half a tank,5 mins later it just started.
got to work drove around for couple of hours no problems then I went to the shops got back and it started doing the same thing again,
Called the AA they took lead of by the distributer and it started,
He told me it was ignition fault,
so got the car serviced, changing plugs, ditributer, drove around a few days no problems,
But then the problem came back, called the AA they said faulty fuel pump this time,
So took fuel pump out got it tested guy said its fine, put it back in the car and it started.
It is starting at the moment but im sure the problem will come back.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Nye

When a fuel pump fails, the initial symptoms are usually that the pump occasionally jams. A good thump in situ, or just the act of removing it will usually be enough to unjam it, whereupon it will work happily until the next time it decides to jam.
This will get more frequent, and it will be more reluctant to restart as time goes on.
Having said that, the pump is high on the list of suspects, but is not the only suspect, as the problem could be many other things.
Another common cause of an E30 engine just cutting out, and restarting sometime later, is a failing crank position sensor. This will also stop the fuel pump, along with the sparks.
The first signs of trouble with these is that they become sensitive to temperature, failing when they get hot.
