Valve adjustment on '89 M30.

What are the specs.? That's basically all I need to know. Also, does anyone have any tips for replacing the timing chain?
Not sure what info you need, but here's what I could find in the TIS:
11 34 Valves with Springs M30 B 35 M
Clearance of
intake and exhaust valves
At max. 35Ԛ° C coolant temperature
mm 0.30
At operating temperature mm 0.35
Min. valve head edge thickness
Machining limit (dimension "A")

Not sure if that has what you are lookig for but it's all I could find, the TIS is a little difficult to use..
Regarding timing chain I think you basically need to take most of the front of the engine off. I dunno how to do it in the car as mine is on a stand but I removed:
Vibration damper, crank pulley, upper and lower timing chain cover, chain tensioner. At that point all the sprockets are visible, I haven't gone any further though.

Umm, I think I found what info. I needed in there. lol Although, I need to convert it to standard. I don't have any feeler gauges that are metric.
As for the timing chain I haven't gotten the balancer off yet. I've got the top cover off though. I've got about a 3 foot section of angle iron bolted to the flywheel, and I've got about 3 feet of leverage to turn the nut. My 28oz. framing hammer isn't enough though. I'm gonna have to get the 5lb. shop hammer, and stand on it with both feet. Maybe that'll break it loose....I hope.

If you get stuck cracking the nut i've got a 3/4" drive breaker bar and socket, with a 4 foot tube for extra leverage you could borrow.
You will also need a hub puller to get the vibration damper hub off the end of the crank, i bust mine trying to remove Toby Unna's vibration damper hub. It removed two hubs OK on my f?cked M30 and the replacment M30.
As you will be taking all the timing chain covers on you will want some gaskets, ECP do a lower engine gasket set that is good value, it's got every gasket an seal you will need.
You will also need a hub puller to get the vibration damper hub off the end of the crank, i bust mine trying to remove Toby Unna's vibration damper hub. It removed two hubs OK on my f?cked M30 and the replacment M30.
As you will be taking all the timing chain covers on you will want some gaskets, ECP do a lower engine gasket set that is good value, it's got every gasket an seal you will need.
I used a 10' bar and it came off with 1 hand more or less, no hammers involved. The balancer itself also came off fairly easy with a hub puller, only had to use a 14mm spanner to turn it. Good thought about the gaskets, I forgot about those..

Andy, thanks for offering to lend out your tools, but I'm afraid that it won't help me much. Seeing as how I'm in America and all.
lol Very kind of you to offer though. As for those gaskets, I've got the oil pan gasket. What other gaskets are there other than the timing cover gaskets? We've got some pullers that I think will work...I hope.

If it's all comming apart i'd change the following.....
Sump gasket
Upper and lower timing cover gaskets
Front and rear crank seals
oil level sensor O ring
Copper washer for the timing chain spring nut
May be also the oil filter housing to block gasket and new O ring and copper washer for the top to the oil filter housing ?
All of the above is included in the bottom half gasket set i got from ECP, may be you could get some thing similar over in the US rather than getting them all separate ?
If it's all comming apart i'd change the following.....

Haha, It's cool man. No big deal. Anyways, I've tried to find a kit with some of that stuff in it, but all I could find was upper and lower cover gaskets. My rear main seal is good, but I don't know about the front one yet. I still haven't gotten it all off yet. Psychomofo, i forgot to say i'd replace the cam seal as well, have you tried to see how much a gasket set is at a BMW dealer ?

Nah, I haven't checked with the stealer. They're too far to drive anyways though. I'll probably just get all my stuff from theeurodepot.com The timing cover set they sell comes with some kind of seal, but I'm not sure if it's the cam seal or not. It looks like it could be though. Is it the seal that goes in the top timing cover piece?

Okay, cool. That's in the timing cover gasket set I'm going to get. Does it come out the back of the cover or the front? I don't wanna be pulling on it in the wrong direction.
On another note I did get the balancer off. Just needed a longer pipe and a bigger hammer.
