I have noticed that BMW use a lifetime antifreeze in some of their newer cars. Set me thinking that if you can keep up the measured strength of your bog standard antifreeze by topping it up with a neat solution would you have to change the whole lot every 4/5 years? Save a lot of grief with air locks et al. Is this viable?

I know when I had my ST24.. Ford use a 10 year anti-freeze.. but when topping it up you'd have to top it up with a pre-mixed antifreeze so that it remains at the same concentration..

But if you engine isnt losing any of the coolant through either leaks or burning it in the engine.. you shouldnt need to ever top it up, its a sealed system in reality.. you dont top up your central heating system in your house once you have filled it up to pressure. :)

Which newer cars do they use it in?

The modern BMW petrol units are all alloy and the new 330D lump is too, I'm just wondering if it would be suitable as a lifetime coolant in the iron block/alloy head E30 engines, especially 325's with thier tendency to crack heads without regular coolant changes.

Saw this comment when I was Googling about renewing antifreeze: "I took my 2005 MCS for an "Inspection 1" service today at 4 years old. Service assistant at Dick Lovett Mini in Swindon specifically said a coolant change is not required on this model, but they do check antifreeze concentration and top up coolant as needed." What is so unique about a MINI that it would not apply to other modern engines?
