Hi,

My car has a very loud ticking noise coming from the engine it increases with acceloration and quitens down when my foot is off the pedal. The noise i believe is the injectors but it sounds like its under my dash.

its a ticking that gets faster and louder with the accelerator pedal and not speed which means it must be down to something like injectors.

Does the exhaust manifold rattle or catch?

Thanks

No, it means that it could be anything related to engine RPM.

If it gets quieter when the engine is warmed up then it is probably the exhaust manifold that has either cracked or is blowing from the gasket, unfortunatly the 6 cylinder cars do shear the manifold to head studs clean off which can cause the leak and its usually number 6 too so you can't get at it easily to drill the old one out with the head on the car.

Quick injector test... rev the engine and listen, when you take your foot off the throttle the ECU switches the injectors off untill the engine reaches about 1000 rpm then brings them back in to keep it from stalling.

It could also be a noisey/loose tappet.

Another thing is the steering shaft has a bung in it, sometimes this drops out so take the horn button out and stuff some blu-tack into the shaft, it might quieten it down a bit.

Ah right nice one gives me a good few things to be looking in to. I don’t mind if I have to remove the head as I am looking at doing some head work on the car.

Thanks
Alex

yea this was another option. i know tappets would cause this noise but its the fact it reacts to the accelerator pedal and not revs
