I have adjusted my tappets to specified limits, but car still sounds tappety. The car has done 182000 and is a 325I, could i tighten them done more and if so by how much? Thinking maybe because of engine wear?

cheers

No your clearance needs to be set as per the specs, if you tighten it too much it well seize when hot. If the tappets are correctly adjusted and there's still a tapping sound then it would normally indicate a worn camshaft or rockers, remove the rocker cover and inspect the camshaft. More important than the mileage is how well maintained it is.

You sure its not the injectors making that tapping noise?

Another candidate would be a slight leak on the exhaust manifold. If in doubt use a screwdriver as a stethoscope to find where the noise is.

The easiest way to check the injectors is simply to rev the engine up, as the revs come back down the injectors turn off until it's down to about 1-1.2K, then they come back on to keep it from stalling.

2nd easiest, get a long screwdriver/pri bar and clean the end of the handle, put it to your ear and touch the other end on the rocker cover and injectors and see which is loudest
