I have just been driving along, (316i, 1989) and a loud (from inside the car) buzzing started. stopped, and with engine running, got out to take a look. buzzing noise much quieter outside. coming from what I assume is the fuel tank. drivers side, under rear seat. got down on ground to feel my way around, the tank is vibrating. buzzing noise does not raise or lower in pitch or volume with revs, nor does noise (at moment) effect driving. Suggestions?

And before you say 'burn it', I've only had it a week.

fuel pump . it might be on its way out but as it stands its still working so look at it as being something needing replaced soon.

Sound like it could be a noisy fuel pump.

Pump is very easy to change: Pull up the rear seat base, remove inspection cover on the RH side, unplug wiring, remove the two pipes, unscrew the four small nuts on the top, pull the level sender straight up and out (it will leak fuel), rotate the fuel pump frame slightly anticlockwise, and carefully wriggle it out.
Your pump will have two pipes on the top, assuming your car is a saloon. Some pumps only have one pipe, and this will be unsuitable for your car, unless you transfer across the actual pump itself.
Before you spend money on anything, check that the bottom of the fuel tank hasn't been dented upwards under the pump, as this can result in a loud buzz if the bottom of the pump is in contact with the tank.
