James the M60 is a V8 as I said. BMW originally were going to call the M20 (the 6-pot engines in E30s) "M60" but changed it to M20 at the last minute.

Both the M20 and M50 are 2494cc, so don't know where the other figure comes from :?

I thought it was between 189-192bhp depending on the emissions equipment actually

The American engines for example are likely to be 189bhp due to the stricter emissions regulations.

Wrong mate when the E21 was new the 6 cylinder cars had what we now know as the M20, back then it was actually called the M60. The engine name changed when the E30 appeared to M20 and the M60 name was dropped. However when the new 3.0 and 4.0 litre V8's appeared in the early 90's the M60 name was reused for these engines. These engines suffered with the dreaded nikasil (sp) bore problem too!
