my starter motor has just packed up on 323i..
would one from another 6 cyl engine be a direct replacement?
starter motor same on all 6 cyl?

yes they are all the same as IIRC
ive just tried to start the car this morning, after a few turns of the ignition it started up... but then after turning it off and trying again nothing would happen until like the 10th turn when it started up again..
im guessing it might not be a starter motor fault?? is there anyway to check if it is starter ot the actual ignition barrel without having to get under the car?
the car is a 1985 323i...

The next time it fails to start, use a piece of wire to short together the two appropriate pins in the diagnostic socket.
The starter motor should engage and turn the engine. This will determine whether the problem is with the motor or the starter circuit.
You will have the early D shaped diagnostic socket, and I think pins 11 and 14 are the ones you want.

or ark the starter with a good screwdriver,across both terminals.but make sure it's out of gear. then you'll know if it
grafts or not.the armature,or solenoid may have given up the chase. a smash on the ingrediient with a lump hammer may wake it up,,,,for a bit,.
