I went to GSF today and they didn't have a clue what oil I should use, nor did APD. I called in at BMW and they said Castrol XJ. When I had the diff checked over the specialist said to use some grade of Valvoline. So just wondering what stuff to buy.

I believe it is Castrol SAF-XJ that you require.

Castrol SAF-XJ or just 'LSD oil' if you're asking at the BMW parts desk.
You need 1.7L for a medium case diff, but I'm not sure on the small case! :thumb:

A good deal, as opie pretty much always are. Expect you'll need 2 bottles!

Apparently this stuff'll work too... TBH I wouldn't bother skimping though! http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-712-castrol ... r-oil.aspx

If you go to the dealers for it then make sure you take an empty bottle(s) for them to put it in.
About £15 per litre at the dealers.

I asked the man who reconditioned it and he said to use 75W-90 GL5 LS from any big name oil supplier.

APD sell it.

Millers LSD oil does seem to help lock up a bit more as well by the way.

I agree with Gussy, In the 4.1 I bought off him that he had refilled with B373, it felt fine but when I put in the Millers oil, It made lock far quicker it seems, Even with good tyres any bit of marginally loose or wet surface under foot while turning slowly or anything and the inside wheel would start to skip. One or two people thought it was welded
