I've just brought my 3rd e30 and ive already ran into my 1st problem.

When I was drive back home last night at sub 30mph the steering seemed to be fine however once over 40mph there is alot of play in the steering wheel and the car sways side to side.

the guy who sold me the car did say that the wheels need to be blanced, which would explain the sway BUT I dont think it would cause play in the steering?

Im thinking it could be my steering rack??..anyone got any ideas?

You can usually tell by feeling for play at the steering wheel; there should be very little if any with a steering rack. It's an MOT failure if there is more than 0.5" play at the steering wheel IIRC.
