ok sometimes the gauge will start to read hot so turn the engine on and off and it reads ok. i have noticed that when it is playing up (as someitmes it does read what i belive to be correct). if i turn the engine off the needle goes quickly all the way to fully hot and drops down too off. when its been good it will just go straight too off. possible earthing fault?
nothing else apears to be effected and a differnet set of clocks made no difference

I'm suffering the same problem recently, I'm putting it down to a poor connection until I can investigate further, too busy at work at the moment and have just broken my wrist too, so I'm short time and motivation.

Check your temperature senser wiring, This is where I'm starting. I would guess its in poor condition andmight either be shorting or poor earth, then I'd remove the cluster and look there.

Mine also appears to read full hot on red on some drives (not all!) the first time it happened I stopped immediatly fearing HG failure and found the engine was barely warm. I'm laying up the car for a few weeks tomorrow though so its no big deal.
