Right guys, I've pretty much narrowed it down to the ICV being broken on my M40.......It stalls at every junction without fail now and I'm getting used to changing gear quickly :p

Things I've done:

Checked for airleaks (breather pipe is cracked so I'll be getting a new one, but I doubt that's the only thing causing it)

New Blue/Brown temp senders

TPS modification (drilled hole at the base and had a nice bit of oil drain out)

Full check on all inlet gaskets, they look ok but will be changing them shortly when I do the timing belt

The car stalls if the inlet air is blocked off and struggles a bit if the oil filler cap is removed........

Unplugging the ICV gives me a nice steady idle and the car doesn't give me any trouble.........except every now and again I get what feels like a misfire which probably isn't doing any good............

The question is now, do you more experienced good selves think the ICV is at fault? Also, I still need the car to get to work, so does it do any damage leaving it unplugged or should I bear with the pain of starting it at every junction for a little while longer?

Also if anyone has a T-shaped ICV for an M40 that definitely works, I'm open to offers!

Probably.

Or......

I have just been through all this with my 325i, started with a hesitation coming off idle, and slowy progressed to trying to catch it so it didn't stall when coming back off throttle.

I cahnged the.....
throttle body
TPS
intake pipes
leads
cap
temp sensors
plugs
exhaust manifold gaskets
AFM
ICV

And adjusted the valves twice!!

in fact the only thing that isn't new is teh seats and I was even starting to wonder if it could have been them!!

In the end I bought a new ECU as the only thing left to try was the intake gasgets and breather pipe and that is a bit of a pain.
Popped the new ECU in yesterday and it is now purring!! :D

Wahey! good to hear... whenever an idle thread comes up it tails out and nobody knows what happens in the end (my suspicion is nobody really solves the problem) so success stories are very welcome :D

unfortunately valve adjustment would be wonderful but can't be done on the M40...... half of me just wants to ditch the lump but the car's in use and any work needs to fit into a weekend.....

Nothing then? Noticed without the ICV plugged in it seems to eat fuel like there's no tomorrow.....even if I don't do a lot of idling........looks like a case of wearing the starter vs. consuming loads of fuel and possibly sooting up the spark plugs...(just a guess, not quite sure)

still looking for a t shaped ICV :p..........
