hey guys, i dont know if its a common problem but i have a lot of movement in my gearshifter when it is in gear, not so much back and forth but left to right movement. very sloppy feel which shouldnt be there especially when in gear. it is becoming trouble some especially when i have to downshift for faster braking in a hurry, (when idiots pull out in front of me) i always seem to miss 2nd gear so i want to get a nice stiff selector going.

i drive a 85 323i (getrag 260 5spd) so it has the older selector mechanism set up with the single rod selector and steel plate. ive only had a quick glance but i think it might be that T shaped mechanism that connects the gearbox to the shift rod. if anybody knows please get back to me asap as i have to do a center bearing on the tailshaft this weekend coming and the gearbox may be easier to work on with no tailshaft. thanks

there are various plastic bushes in the linkage that wear over time, have you checked them?
