how to identify what type engine is in 316i?????

hi just a quicky, my mate has just bought a very low 316i on an h plate. just gone over a raised manhole and smashed the sump, how do we identify the engine i.e. m10 etc? so we can get the right sump?

If it is a 'H' plate it will be an M40.If it has EFI it will be an M40.If the rusty turd has a carberettor it will be an M10..if it says 1800cc on the V5 it will be an M10.

A 316i will be an M40. The 1800 unit with a carb will be marked as a 316 on the boot.

If it smashes the sump on anything taller than a pebble it'll be an M40 :rofl:
