Hi
need a clutch on my 88 325i and havent changed a clutch myself for over 10yrs,so i thought id get my local garage to do it to save all the stress etc
he said £180 for a genuine clutch
and £300 labour
is this about right or should i go loosen his teeth?
think ill do it myself, but ive only changed clutches on fwd cars!
is it a nightmare to do on an e30?
thanks (in advance)

£300 labour sounds extortionate to me! 8O

I prefer removing and fitting gearboxes on rear wheel drive cars.

If you've got stands or ramps, and some fairly basic tools then it's quite a straight forward but time consuming job if you've not done one before.

Propshaft bolts can be very tight but once those and the gearbox bolts are out it's easy. Nice small gearbox too! :)

Good time to change the propshaft guibo while you are there!

Ive got axel stands & ramps but wasnt sure how high the car needs to be raised to get under and comfortably remove the box ive done loads on fwd cars but wasnt sure how awkard a rwd would be without access to a ramp or pit!

erm I was quoted £240 all in, about 60-80 of that was the clutch. and £30 an hour labour was I think.

£300 labour? do it yourself in between half a shift and a full day depending on how handy you are with the spanners. ive only ever done rwd clutches and its pretty straight forward.

£480 to change an E30 clutch!! Even a BMW dealer would blush at that quote!
Sachs clutch from Eurocarparts is about £100. Only difference is that it has Sachs stamped on it instead of Sachs-BMW.
