what's that noise?

Hi everyone, I have a 318i which is an M40 engine. It has an intermittent ticking which is really bugging me. I thought it was a bad hydraulic lifter but one second its ticking, the next its quiet. Ive even found sometimes when its ticking if I increase the revs the ticking disappears making me wonder whether the oil pressure could be a factor. Has anyone come across this? Any ideas? Thanks guys!
